Archaeology

Machu Picchu path

Peru is one of the richest countries in the world in terms of archaeology. As amazing and famous as Machu Picchu may be, it’s really just a drop in the ocean in archeological terms. Cusco is full of archeological sites, as is the Sacred Valley of the Incas and the South Valley.

On the coast, the oldest archeological site is Caral, a city built around 3000BCE. Other important coastal archeological sites are Nazca, Chan Chan and Sipán.

In the northern Andes, the Chachapoya ruled the cloud forests for over a thousand years and left many archeological sites. In Peru’s southern mountains, the Wari near Ayacucho were the most important pre-Inca civilization.
