Huaca Rajada

The Lord of Sipán’s tomb

Huaca Rajada tomb with replicas

The tomb where the Lord of Sipán was discovered and excavated in 1987 is called Huaca Rajada. Few people visit because everything in the tombs are replicas and they’re not made to look realistic.

Since the tombs were discovered by looters, everybody who worked on the illegal antiquities market knew exactly how valuable the artifacts at Huaca Rajada were. It was extremely difficult to secure the site and still is.

3rd century dog ceramic from Huaca Rajada

Consequently, none of the artifacts in the tombs look at all like something you would want to steal. There is a small museum on site with original ceramics, like the 3rd century dog above, but all metal objects and skeletons are now in the secure Museum of Royal Tombs in Lambayeque, on the other side of Chiclayo from Huaca Rajada.
