Amazonas Archeology
Archeology in Amazonas centers the Chachapoya, a unique culture that ruled the cloud forest for over a thousand years. They had very unique architecture, featuring rounded buildings, stone verandas at the level of the doors, with rhomboid and zig-zag patterns built into the walls of important buildings.
Resistance
The Chachapoya were called the Warriors of the Clouds because they resisted the Inca longer and more fiercely than any other Andean culture. Their resistance was based in Kuélap, the most important archeological site in this part of Peru.
Capitulation
The Inca still defeated them in the 1470s and sent the fiercest fighters to work on construction projects throughout their lands. The Chachapoya’s architecture is so distinctive and so unlike other Andean cultures, that their round homes are easily identifiable throughout Peru.
