Museo de Santuarios Andinos
Museum of Andean Sanctuaries
Arequipa’s Museo de Santuarios Andinos was built for the frozen mummy officially known as the Lady of Ampato, but locally affectionately called Juanita. She was a 13 or 14 year old girl from Cusco who was sacrificed in the 1440s.
She was not mummified after death, but wrapped with other sacrificial offerings in a bundle and left on the mountain at 6400m above sea level (21,000ft) where she was naturally frozen. In a 1955 National Geographic expedition, American archeologist Johan Reinhard saw the bundle and it was brought down off the mountain.
Juanita is kept frozen and, depending on studies, is not always on display. However, the fascinating offerings left with her on Ampato are always on display. The most exquisite is a miniature of her, complete with her exact clothes. The feathered headdress above was hers but the miniature has a tiny replica.
