Catalunya
Catalunya is proud of its separate identity, history and culture, manifested most clearly in its language. Although it became part of the kingdom of Aragón in the twelfth century, Catalunya held on to its hard-won rights and privileges and has asserted its desire for greater autonomy ever since. Proud of its mercantile and commercial history, Catalunya looks outwards towards the Mediterranean rather than inwards towards the Iberian peninsula and this is also reflected in its cuisine.
The region competes with the Basque Country for top spot in terms of gastronomic excellence with a large number of world-renowned restaurants and celebrity chefs. The quality of Catalan produce is another contributory factor. Seafood, fruit, vegetables and poultry are to the fore as are various versions of butifarra (sausage) and a whole range of sweet desserts. As for wines, Catalunya has some top class red and white as well as the sparkling wine Cava which is a must for any celebration.
