No longer in the shadow of the French, Spanish reds have gained a deserved reputation for taste, quality and value for money. Although it is Rioja and Ribera del Duero that dominate outside Spain, it is worth seeking out the lesser known wines and regions and drinking something from a local bodega.

Classification

Wines are classified in five different levels from highest known as vino de pago (VP) for particular vineyards, through the denominación de origen calificada (DOCa) and demoninación de origen (DO) to the lowest vino de la tierra (VT). However, don’t let this be the main criteria as there are some great reds in the lower classifications.
