South Rim: Hermit Road In-A-Day

Gaze into space

Eight miles, eight viewpoints, all a must-see canyon experience.

Except from March 1 to November 30 when private vehicles are allowed, the Hermit Road viewpoints are accessible only by the RED shuttle route to Hermits Rest. Or by bike or foot on the 7.8-mile (one-away) Canyon Rim Trail. It’s not as hard as it sounds. The flat path winds along the rim with stunning views between the viewpoints. Many hike to Mohave Point (3 mi.) or the Abyss (4.1 mi. total), then take the Shuttle to Hermits Rest, then back to the Village.

Morning

The trail starts at the shuttle bus transfer station west of Bright Angel Lodge & Cabins and continues 0.7 mile to Trailview Overlook facing east. The view looks down at the Bright Angel Trail switchbacks that cut steeply down Bright Angel Fault to Indian Gardens.
