Ollantaytambo Town
Train to Machu Picchu
Ollantaytambo is the western end of the Sacred Valley and where you catch the train to Aguas Calientes, for the shuttle to Machu Picchu. However, those with time to see the town are in for a treat. This is the most complete Inca city left, with original streets and water canals.
For archeology, Ollantaytambo has it’s eponymous Ollantaytambo Inca ruins, the Pinkuylluna Inca storehouses and nearby Pumamarca. There is an artisan market just outside the main Inca ruins but prices are better in Cusco or Pisac and the stuff the same.
Simply walking the streets of Ollantaytambo is an experience in archeology and history, as most stone walls are original. Even the new parts of town have been built to look old, like the stonework around the town’s only ATM, above.
