Blackfriars & Chinatown In-a-Day

The City Walls, China Town & a couple of Museums

Blackfriars and China Town, (the latter is mainly on Stowell Street), are in the west of the City on the edge of Grainger Town. This is a relatively small neighbourhood compared with the others and can be easily explored in a couple of hours although if you choose to visit the recommended museums this will take at least a full day.

Morning

You can find these areas behind The Gate and they are more or less enclosed on the North side by the medieval West Walls.

Start at Blackfriars and enjoy the relatively tranquil ambience compared to the busy City Centre nearby. Continue to Stowell Street or Newcastle's Chinatown, where you'll find the King Neptune restaurant, is just across from Blackfriars and the Chinese Arch constructed in 2004 is well worth seeing. Running along the back of Stowell Street are the West Walls built to defend the inhabitants from marauding Scotsmen during the Middle Ages.
