Stowell Street

Newcastle's Chinatown

Located just inside the City's West Walls, Stowell Street was constructed in 1824 as a way through Blackfriars and named after Lord Stowell, a local judge. During the 1850s the authorities broke through the Town Wall to enable access to Bath Lane.

During the 1970s, Stowell Street gradually became Newcastle's Chinatown and the Wing Hong Chinese supermarket became the first Chinese business to relocate here nearly 30 years after the first Chinese immigrants settled in the North East.

Only a few of the original buildings are left - numbers 34-36 which are restaurants. Rosie's Bar beside the Chinese Arch was built in 1890 and the former Co-operative Warehouse, built in 1908, is at 14-18.
