Blackfriars

The Newcastle base of the Dominican Friars

Blackfriars was a Friary established by the Dominicans during the 13th century and the buildings covered 2.83 hectares/seven acres on which there were two gardens and some dwellings in addition to the religious buildings.

During the 16th Century Reformation the Friary was dissolved and gradually fell into disrepair. Only the buildings of the Cloisters remain and, following restoration during the late 20th century, we are left with a pleasant grassy area to walk in, some craft workshops and a period dining room, the Blackfriars Restaurant.
