History

The Response, 1914 (Detail)

Newcastle - an ancient city

Newcastle upon Tyne, the main city of northeast England, sits proudly on the north bank of the River Tyne. A blend of the ancient with the contemporary, the City is surrounded by the stunning beauty of Northumberland and Durham.

From being an important outpost during Roman Times Newcastle sank into obscurity until the Normans arrived and built a castle to guard the river crossing. During the late Medieval and Tudor & Stuart periods the Coal Industry dominated trade and allowed the region to develop into a major centre of the Industrial Revolution during the Georgian & Victorian Eras.

Newcastle Today

Newcastle is famous today for its shopping, its night-life, its Universities, its soccer team and above all its spectacular bridges. Its citizens are known the world over as Geordies, a reference to their support for both King Georges during the Jacobite Rebellions!
