120–410: Roman

Newcastle dates back to Roman Times with the construction of a bridge across the Tyne in AD 120.

A settlement soon grew up on the northern shore and was named Pons Aelius, or Bridge of Aelius, the family name of Emperor Hadrian who built the nearby Roman Wall.

After the collapse of the Roman Empire in the West during the 5th century, local people continued to live here and the town became known as Monkchester.
