Providence, RI
Roger Williams founded Providence in 1636 as a refuge for religious liberty after he was kicked out of Massachusetts for his “dangerous” views: promoting the separation of church and state and wanting to purchase land fairly from Native Americans.
Today, visitors come to the waterfront city for its colonial history, vibrant artistic and intellectual life, and culinary scene.
Providence is also home to innovative places of higher learning: the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Brown University, as well as the Johnson and Wales culinary school.
Districts
Students tend to live in the colonial homes of leafy College Hill and Fox Point neighborhoods: with them come cafes, bubble tea stores, boutiques, and bookstores.
