Benefit Street

Mile of historical homes

Concert Under the Elms at the John Brown House (Providence, Rhode Island): Atwater-Donnelly with Cathy Clasper-Torch and Erin Lobb Mason.

Benefit Street aka the “Mile of History,” is a picturesque walk past 18th- and 19th-century architecture — Colonial, Federal, Greek Revival.

Landmarks include the John Brown House, the house of Stephen Hopkins (who signed the Declaration of Independence), the Providence Athenaeum, and the First Baptist Church in America, with Brown University and the Rhode Island School of Design nearby.

Self-guided tours such as the one by the MoHA (Mile of History Association) make it easy to explore at your own pace. Guided tours are available by the Rhode Island Historical Society at the John Brown House (52 Benefit St; this entry’s map location)
