Elisabet Ney Museum

Sculpture museum

Stephen F. Austin Statue

This atmospheric museum is the former home and studio of Elisabet Ney, a German-born sculptor who moved to Austin in 1892.

She sculpted life-size likenesses of Texans Stephen Austin and Sam Houston for the Chicago World’s Fair; these sculptures are on display at the state capitol in Austin and the US Capitol in Washington, D.C.

A plaster model of Lady Macbeth, Ney’s personal favorite, is prominently displayed at the museum; its marble counterpart is in the Smithsonian.

You can see her “Lady Liberty” at the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, and her touching memorial to General Albert Sidney Johnston at the Texas State Cemetery.
