Grainger Town In-a-Morning
A 2-hour stroll in the City Centre
If you've only a couple of hours to spare then what better than to have a quick stroll around the City Centre? You'll miss the fabulous Quayside but there's always another time!
Head for Grey's Monument, you can't miss it, set in its own square at the top of Grey Street and next to the Monument Mall. Admire the splendid monument and read the information boards below which explain the impact the Earl had on society just prior to the Victorian era.
When you've absorbed all this, have a look down Grey Street towards the River. The vista of Neoclassical buildings as the street gently curves downhill is splendid and has been admired by many for nearly two centuries.
Stroll slowly down Grey Street admiring the wonderful work of architects Grainger and Dobson and as you cross Market Street you'll see on your left the magnificent Palladian portico of the Theatre Royal. Proceed down the hill till you come to the medieval cobbled High Bridge Quarter comprising High Bridge, Upper High Bridge and Old George Yard. Here you'll find the independent retailers so rare in today's cities.
