Grainger Market

Newcastle's indoor market

M&S Original Penny Bazaar

This Grade I listed covered market was built in 1835 by Richard Grainger to replace the old markets that had existed for centuries in the vicinity. Originally only meat and vegetables were on offer but nowadays you can also find jewellers, florists, bakers, street food purveyors, coffee shops and cafés.

In addition to the market stalls there are a couple of surprises. Tucked away along Alleys 3, at numbers 133-138, is the world's smallest M&S store, Marks and Spencer Original Penny Bazaar, and along Alley 1 (or Alley 2, No 60) is the Weigh House.

At one time it was a legal requirement to ensure that advertised weights were adhered to. Nowadays, the Weigh House can be used by anyone who is watching their weight!
