Grey Street

Richard Grainger's masterpiece

Britain’s finest street

Undoubtedly one the most stunning city streets in England, it was actually voted Britain’s finest street by BBC Radio 4 listeners in 2004.

This splendid street was constructed in the 1830s to a design by local architect Richard Grainger. It descends towards the River in a graceful curve until it reaches Market Street and then becomes the equally fine, but straight, Dean Street.

Admired by John Betjeman

With Grey’s Monument looking down the street at the top this is the heart of Grainger Town. The poet John Betjeman was so impressed that he wrote ‘As for the curve of Grey Street, I shall never forget seeing it to perfection, traffic-less on a misty Sunday Morning’.

Pride of place in this parade of great architecture is the Theatre Royal near the top of the street with its Palladian facade protruding onto the pavement. Nowadays partially traffic free, strolling down Grey Street gives a true feel of the City and should not be missed.
