Art & Architecture

el Palacio de Bellas Artes

Welcome to the nation’s cultural capital. With a whopping 150 museums and an ample amount of soulful murals, art galleries and crafts markets, Mexico City spoils visitors with its seemingly limitless art offerings.

Art

The compelling murals in Palacio Nacional and Palacio de Bellas Artes make an impressive introduction to the art scene, then head south to Frida and Diego’s old stomping grounds and check out some of their most famous works in Museo Dolores Olmedo and Museo Frida Kahlo. For contemporary art, don’t miss the cutting-edge exhibits at MUAC and Museo Jumex, and for gallery-hopping take a stroll along Calle Colima and Calle Tabasco in the Roma neighborhood.

Architecture

The city is also a haven for architecture buffs. The nearby archaeological site of Teotihuacán wows visitors with its towering pre-Hispanic pyramids, while colonial gems abound in the Centro Histórico, a downtown area dotted with 1,500-plus historic buildings. Meanwhile, in the happening Condesa and Roma neighborhoods, you’ll come across a slew of art deco and California Colonial-style homes, while along Avenida Paseo de la Reforma, skyscrapers rise high above the emblematic tree-lined avenue. And then there’s the colorful Casa Luis Barragán, the former home and studio of one of Mexico’s most prominent contemporary architects.
