Queen’s Park
Historical green space
Frequently overlooked by tourists, Queen’s Park is a pleasant, shady green space in Central Bridgetown, with a children’s play area, a fountain and a sports field. The park also hosts public events such as Agrofest and the delivery of the last canes at the opening of Crop Over.
Steeped in colonial history – with its associated ills – the park is currently being repurposed to become a cultural hub. Queen’s Park House (pictured above) was built in 1783 and was home to the Commander in Chief of the British troops in the West Indies. Beautifully renovated in 2017, it now houses a theatre and an art gallery.
Queen’s Park was inaugurated in 1909. The glorious bandstand also dates back to that time and comes to life on Christmas morning, when the Barbados Police Band plays to the assembled crowds.
