Christmas & New Year

The festive season

time before christmas

Christmas and New Year is peak holiday season for tourists and Barbadians alike, so although shops may close, there will be plenty of traditional festive events.

Expect carol concerts, beach parties and on Christmas Day the annual Queen’s Park gathering, where Barbadians turn up in their finery after attending church.

Old Year’s Night (New Year’s Eve) is marked with coastal firework displays at Sandy Lane, Holetown, Carlisle Bay, St Lawrence Gap and on the South Coast boardwalk.

Alongside turkey, ham and beef, you may find items such as jug-jug – involving salted dry meats, pigeon peas and chopped herbs, and believed to have origins in Scottish haggis. Also great cake, which is rich fruit cake with lashings of rum.
