Bridgetown In-a-Day
Historical Bridgetown
The two most interesting areas to explore on foot comprise Barbados’ UNESCO World Heritage Site: Bridgetown’s historical centre and the Garrison area, located some mile and a half (2.4km) southeast.
Morning
Start off in leafy Independence Square, which is presided over by a bronze statue of Errol Barrow, the country’s first post-Independence prime minister. It also offers the best view (pictured above) across the water of the Parliament buildings. Diagonally opposite, Golden Square Freedom Park is of particular interest to enthusiasts of Barbadian history.
Crossing the main road bridge and turning right at the traffic lights takes you past St Michael’s Cathedral to the soon-to-be renamed Queen’s Park, with its splendid ancient baobab tree (pictured above), and the attractively restored eighteenth-century Queen’s Park House, which holds a theatre and art gallery.
