Central Lima

Plaza San Martin Lima

Lima has had large urban communities since 200 BCE. The historic center has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1988. Today the city is home to over 11 million people but the historic center of the city is very different from the sprawling suburbs.

Colonial Lima was founded on Jan. 18, 1535 by Francisco Pizarro as “Ciudad de los Reyes”: City of Kings.

The name didn’t stick but it still became the capitol of the Spanish Viceroyalty of Peru, which controlled most of South America.
