Museo Convento San Francisco y Catacumbas
Colonial art & catacombs
Museo Convento San Francisco y Catacumbas has religious and colonial art and is still a functioning church. There are several historical rooms, like the library and the choir chamber that are open to visitors. The architecture alone is worth the visit.
It’s most famous for the catacombs and its extensive art collection.
The catacombs are burial chambers for those who used to live at the monastery. The most famous part is a pit over 15 meters deep that is full of the bones of former monks and religious figures. Skulls and some femurs have been arranged on top, but below most of the bones have been crushed by the weight of other bones.
Entry is only with a guided tour, which is in either Spanish or English. Tours depart when they have a group and lasts about 45 minutes.
