Pampas del Heath

Santuario Nacional Pampas del Heath

Maned Wolf

This is one of the most unique ecosystems on the planet: high altitude, humid grasslands. From the air, it resembles an African plain, except for the humidity, altitude and continent.

Wildlife

It is home to many endemic species, the most famous being the maned wolf: lobo de crin. This long-legged canine with a fox face is neither wolf nor fox. It is the only species of the genus Chrysocyon and the largest canine of South America.

Transport

This is one of the hardest places to get to in Peru. From Puerto Maldonado you have to drive upriver (in a boat, of course) about six hours to Puerto Pardo on the border with Bolivia. Then it’s about two days up the Heath River, which is the border between Peru and Bolivia. Another option is to go downriver from Lake Titicaca, though that is less common.
