Moyobamba

Orchid city

Moyobamba is the capital of the San Martín region and most famous for orchids. There are several fantastic orchid gardens in town. The most famous are the San Francisco Botanical Gardens.

La Tingana Refugio Natural

An hour north of town is La Tingana Refugio Natural, which is absolutely worth a visit. This eco-reserve is a cooperative created by local families who wanted to preserve the flora and fauna while also opening it up to tourists. The guides are locals who know exactly where to look for animals that would be invisible to most of us.

The source of the Tio Yacu

Just 45 min west of Moyobamba is Centro Turistico Naciente del Río Tio Yacu. These are clear, cold springs that form the beginnings of the river Tio Yacu.

Transport

Moyobamba is just over two hours’ drive northwest of Tarapoto.
