Tingana Nature Preserve
Birding & monkeys
An hour north of town is La Tingana Refugio Natural, which is absolutely worth a visit. They are the highest altitude wetlands in Peru with unique biodiversity and all 5 of Peru’s species of kingfishers.
This eco-reserve is a cooperative created by local families who wanted to preserve the flora and fauna while also opening it up to tourists. The guides are locals who know exactly where to look for animals invisible to most of us.
Besides lots of birds, I saw three species of monkeys, sloths and a family of coatis when I visited.
Don’t miss the organic vanilla orchid farm near the Tingana lodge.
