Sonche Canyon

Spectacular cloud forest canyon (3hrs)

Waimea Canyon

Most people visit the overlook at the top of the canyon for the view down into the canyon. It’s not a major hiking destination, like Colca Canyon, but it is equally deep and beautiful. The canyon is about 11km (6.8mi) long and 900m (2953ft) deep.

There are two main spots to peer down into the canyon: Mirador de Huancas & Mirador Huanco Urco. It’s about a 5km (3mi) walk between the miradors, if you’re looking for a way to turn this into a hike. There are other starting points along the way, so plan ahead where you want to start and stop walking.

This is cloud forest, so always have a rain jacket. Clouds often build in the afternoon so an early morning hike is your best bet for a clear view.

Practicalities

The easiest way to get here is to take a taxi or tour from Chachapoyas, only 8km away. If using public transport, take the colectivo from the Chachapoyas bus terminal towards Huancas and ask to be let off at the Mirador de Huancas.
