Lit & Phil
The Literary & Philosophical Society
Located on the edge of Grainger Town near the Central Station, the Lit & Phil doesn't sound like the kind of place to go on a short trip to Newcastle. However, you'd be wrong! This Neoclassical Grade II listed building dating from 1793 houses a large independent library consisting of 170,000 books housed in period surroundings.
The Society was founded as a conversation club, although politics and religion as topics were expressly banned. It was nonetheless very liberal and female members were admitted as early as 1804.
The library was opened to the public in 1825 and the rooms have changed little over the years. Looking round, you will be transported back into the 19th Century as you marvel at the extensive collection of books especially when you climb the spiral staircase and admire the scene below.
Visiting is free although you need to become a member to borrow books. Famous members have included the architects Richard Grainger and John Dobson, former Prime Minister Earl Grey, the railway and civil engineer Robert Stephenson and, in more recent times, Neil Tennant of the Pet Shop Boys and the actor/singer/quiz show host Alexander Armstrong.
