Bay of Fundy
As northeast as it gets
For people who want to go as far as they can, at the far eastern edge of Maine near the Canadian border lies the Bay of Fundy.
The Bay is a natural wonder, having the world’s highest tides, reaching over 16 meters (50 feet). It also has the second largest whirlpool on earth, Old Sow, caused by the tides.
The quiet coastal towns of Lubec and Eastport are gateways to this natural phenomenon. Lubec, the easternmost town in the United States, has a pretty harbor and the candy-striped West Quoddy Head Lighthouse (this entry’s map location), perched on cliffs overlooking the bay. Nearby Roosevelt Campobello International Park, just across the bridge into Canada, was once Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s summer retreat and offers wooded trails and sweeping Fundy views.
