Monhegan Island
High cliffs & fairy houses
Picturesque Monhegan Island is only accessible via a year-round ferry, so there are no cars. It’s no suprrise it was an artist colony starting in the mid-19th century. Today, it consists of a village with hotels, gifts shops, a museum, a library, and a handful of restaurants. In addition, there are art studios and fairy houses (yes, houses intended for fairies!).
Birdwatchers take note — there’s plenty to see here!
The lighthouse offers good views. The highlight is surely the 17 miles of hiking trails that lead to the highest ocean cliffs on the Maine coastline.
Monhegan Boat Line also offers cruises.
