Portland Museum of Art
Mighty collection in a seafaring city
In 1911, a philanthropist donated her Federal-style mansion to house a collection of art that had been growing above a dry-goods store for nearly 30 years thanks to a group of local artists and civic leaders who wanted world culture in their small, seafaring city.
Today, housed over several buildings including one designed by I.M.Pei, the Portland Museum of Art holds an excellent collection with impressionist works like Renoir’s Confidences and Winslow Homer’s dramatic paintings and etchings.
The collection also includes native American art, and modern and contemporary art with pieces by Andrew Wyeth and Alex Katz.
