Hokkaidō In-18-Days
The wilds of northern Japan - for adventurers with a rental car
Think of this as a May to October itinerary for adventurers - best once the snow has melted away.
Skiers will want to hit Hokkaidō between December and April and head to the slopes.
We’ve allowed 18 days for this itinerary, but you could easily take a month. Many do something similar on bicycles - see the Hokkaidō Cycling Tourism Guide.
Taking a tent and sleeping bags for this itinerary is a great idea, especially if you’re going in the warmer summer months.
Days 1-3: Fly into New Chitose Airport, the island’s gateway airport, and take a train into Sapporo to explore the prefectural capital for a couple of days. Don’t miss the entertainment district of Susukino.
Day 4: Pick up a rental car and drive through to Furano to see the flower fields, plus a bit of tasting at the winery and cheesery.
