Drinking & Nightlife

To drink sake

Drinking has long been a popular pastime in Japan and the same advice applies as for Eating when it comes to choosing a place to go drinking: stroll down the street and see what takes your fancy.

Of course, it helps to be in the right neighbourhood - if you’re in Tōkyō, head to Shibuya or Kabukichō out the east side of Shinjuku station in Tōkyō; Minami in Osaka (especially around Dotomburi) and Susukino in Sapporo. But every Japanese city has a nightlife district, even if it’s only a few streets.

Don’t worry too much if you have limited Japanese language ability - the Japanese word for beer is bīru, coffee is kōhī and sake is well, sake. How hard can it be?
