Indian Garden Campground

Half-way haven on hell of a trail

Bright Angel Trail drops a steep 3,195 feet from the South Rim for 4.8 miles to Indian Garden Campground, open year around. The campground has a ranger station, emergency phone, year-round potable water, and toilets. The 15 campsites have a picnic table, pack pole, and metal food storage can required for all food, toiletries, and plastics.

Camping requires a Backcountry Permit and is limited to 2 nights per hike. A 1.5-mile side trail to Plateau Point offers excellent views of the Inner Gorge. Bright Angel Trail, with numerous switchbacks, was used for over 1,000 years by Indians, who lived at the springs until displaced when the park was formed. From May–Oct., water is available at Mile-and-a-Half and Three-mile rest houses on the way down.

From Indian Garden, the trail continues 4.7 miles to the River and Bright Angel Campground. You can get a good view of the trail, switchbacks, and Indian Garden from Trailview Overlook. Download a PDF of the trail description.
