Avant-garde traditions

Zagreb - Muzej suvremene umjetnosti

Zagreb spent much of the second half of the 20th century at the forefront of European avant-gardes, a status celebrated in the extensive displays of the Museum of Contemporary Art (Muzej suvremene umjetnosti or MSU).

Located in the concrete urban sprawl of Novi Zagreb south of the River Sava, it’s an uncompromising building, with a zig-zag profile on the outside and lots of minimalist grey within.

The permanent exhibition is regularly rotated although several key Croatian abstract, digital and conceptual artists are always on show. Highlights include meander paintings of Julije Knifer, the mercurial sculptures of Ivan Kožarić and the intimate, ambiguous slogan-artworks of ironic pranksters Goran Trbuljak and Mladen Stilinović.
