Zagreb In-A-Day
A city for strollers
Zagreb offers the set-piece sights one would expect from a capital city, although it’s the opportunity to stroll its markets, pavement-cafe quarters and green open spaces that really brings out the best in the city.
Morning
Begin the day on the animated main square before strolling uphill and eastwards to admire the cavernous interior of the twin-spired Neo-Gothic Zagreb Cathedral. From here cut across the animated, photogenic Dolac market towards the picturesque, café-lined Tkalčićeva ulica. It’s a short uphill walk to The Upper Town, where you can visit the award-winning Museum of Broken Relationships before soaking up the impressive views from the Upper Town’s ridge-top promenade.
Lunch
Descend on foot or via funicular to the busy shop-filled Lower Town to enjoy a traditional Croatian lunch at Vinodol.
Afternoon
Take the tram to Maksimir Park, the expansive park that offers landscaped lawns and lakes as well as some genuinely dense woodland. Alternatively head out to the tower-block suburb of Novi Zagreb and the never-less-than-intriguing displays at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
Evening
Head back to Tkalčićeva and its boisterous cafe strip or opt for a cosier evening at Pizzeria Karijola and its secluded upstairs wine bar.
