Art
There’s a lot that’s unique and distinctive about art from the territory of present-day Croatia, ranging from the snazzily decorated pots of the prehistoric Vučedol Culture Museum to the arty subversion on display at Zagreb’s Museum of Contemporary Art.
Other cultural riches unique to the country include the Graeco-Roman sculpture known as the Apoxyomenos on the island of Lošinj, the medieval frescoes of Istria’s churches (notably those in the graveyard chapel at Beram), the glittering canvases of Dubrovnik’s Renaissance painters, and the Venetian paintings found in churches up and down the Dalmatian coast (including a clutch of Tintorettos on the islands of Korčula and Brač).
Many of Croatia’s more modern museums are works of art in their own right - notably Zagreb’s Museum of Broken Relationships, which started out as a temporary art installation and grew into a permanent institution.
Contemporary Croatian design is present in the country’s better souvenir shops, including Take Me Home, Zagreb and Life According to Kawa, Dubrovnik.
