Flower Forest

A tropical botanical treat

Arguably, the largest of Barbados’ four tropical gardens, the Flower Forest is spread across fifty acres of former plantation land. Initially laid out by a horticulturalist trained by Kew Gardens in the early 1980s, it is still being expanded. Since the gardens border the Scotland District, you can expect some steep paths, but also some lovely views – in particular, a spectacular view across to the Atlantic coast from Liv’s Lookout.

Among the many plants labelled with both common and botanical names, the heliconias and ginger lillies (such as the fabulous torch ginger lilly pictured above) stand out. The cascading turqouise flowers of the jade vine (below) are also stunning (Feb–March).

There are plenty of picnic spots, although you might prefer their pleasant terrace café, which serves tasty Bajan-style light lunches, including great fishcakes and home-made ice-lollies.
