Edinburgh In-A-Day

City orientation & the big sights

Edinburgh skyline taken from Calton Hill at sunset.

With a seemingly unending series of hidden corners to explore, Edinburgh is a great place to just wander fairly aimlessly, but for a solid one-day introduction to Scotland's capital try this:

Edinburgh Day

Morning

Start at the Palace of Holyroodhouse and investigate the intriguing Scottish Parliament before striding up the picturesque Royal Mile, the key thoroughfare in the multi-level Old Town, towards Edinburgh Castle. Take time to admire the many historic buildings and duck down one or two of the wynds (alleys) that dot its length. Leave this strip to investigate the artifact-laden National Museum of Scotland - the best Old Town rainy day option.
