Jacobite Steam Train
A bit of history; a lot of landscape

Harry Potter fans will immediately recognise the Jacobite Steam Train as the Hogwarts Express. The locomotive was used in the young magician's films, as were some of the locations along the railway line – particularly the 21-arched Glenfinnan viaduct.
But the line has its own history too: opened in 1901 steam trains have run here ever since (except during a 17-year diesel locomotives era from 1967).
That steam trains and even the line itself remain in use, is solely down to tourist interest – a fine example of how visitors can help preserve local history and support remote infrastructure.
But the 84-mile round trip to Mallaig for other reasons too: the loch-and-glen scenery is simply magical.
