Paucartambo

Gateway to Manu

Paucartambo from mirador

The tiny village of Paucartambo is the most common stop on the drive from Cusco to Manu and tours in the Madre de Dios rainforest region.

Many tour companies stop in Paucartambo on the way to Manu because it’s about halfway and it’s after a section of very twisty road that leaves many people carsick. There is a small museum that many tour visit, which explains the Virgen de Carmen celebration.

There are only a couple basic hostels in Paucartambo, so if you want to spend the night there be sure you make a reservation before you go.

Paucartambo church and Virgin of Carmen

If you want to go for the Virgin of Carmen celebration July 15-18, you must have a place to stay before you go. Due to the limited lodging, most people go with a tour from Cusco just for one day of the celebration.

Independent travel

If you want to go without a tour, there are shared taxis and vans that leave from the Control San Jerónimo bus stop in Cusco. Prices range between s/15 and s/25 depending on the vehicle size.
