Marvelous Spatuletail Refuge
Endemic hummingbirds in Cocachimba
This is the best place to see the endemic Marvelous Spatuletail, and it’s a very easy spot to access. There is almost always a male Marvelous Spatuletail in the mornings and evenings, plus other specie sof hummingbirds, tanagers and other birds.
Right as you drive in to Cocachimba, on your left is the Refugio del Colibrí Cola Espatula, dedicated to Peru’s most famous hummingbird. While the Gallito de las Rocas may be considered the national bird, it’s the Marvelous Spatuletail that made it on the 100 soles bill.
The refuge is run by a local family who decided in 2019 to replant land previously be used to grow hay. They focused on native plants and trees that attract birds, especially mosgal, the Marvelous Spatuletail’s favorite flowering shrub.
Open 8:30-9:30am and 5:00-6:10pm. Entrance fee is s/30 soles.
