Huamachuco

Mountain town & archeology

Marcahuamacucho

This is a small city but a great base from which to visit several great archeological sites. The most famous site is Marcahuamachuco, which has been in consideration as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2019. It’s been compared to Caral-Supe and to Chaco Canyon in the US.

Huiracochapampa

Just a few minutes north of town is Huiracochapampa (also spelled Viracochapampa). This archeological site has received very little restoration work so far, but is actively under the care of the Ministry of Culture.

Laguna de Sausacocha

A 20 minute drive from town takes you to Laguna de Sausacocha, which has a cute little town and a lake where you can rent boats and spend the day on the water.

Aguas Termales El Edén

An hour southeast are the Eden hot springs: Aguas Termales El Edén. These have only recently been developed, but there are several pools and cabins to rent.

Transport

Huamachuco is a 4 hour drive inland from Trujillo. It’s too far north to be accessible from Huaraz.
