Río Abiseo National Park

Jungle & archeology

Amazon, Peru

This is an amazing place for both spotting wildlife and visiting archeological sites. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990. Among the endangered species that you can spot here is the yellow-tailed wooly monkey. You can also see spectacled bears, several species of monkeys and lots of amazing birds.

Archeology

Important archeological sites include Los Pinchudos, Pampa de Cuyes, Puerta del Monte, El Mirador and Ochanache.

Practicalities

This piece of the Peruvian Amazon is in both La Libertad and San Martín. Most people access the area from the town of Juanjuí. There are daily flights from Lima to Juanjuí, though often only one per day.

There are several tour agencies in Juanjuí which run tours into the park.
