Pongo de Manseriche

River canyon adventure

Traveling to the Amazon

This is a three mile long canyon on the Marañón River. It’s a popular place for boating and spotting wildlife. The canyon is very narrow in places, with strong rapids and whirlpools.

The name comes from the Quechua word for door or gate: punku. Get a glimpse of the canyon on this video.

Tours

There are several companies in Tarapoto and Jaén that run boat tours through the canyon. Research them carefully, looking primarily for safety and emergency preparedness.
