Chachapoyas

City & airport

Plaza de armas de Chachapoyas 3

This is a small city with all of the typical attractions of a Peruvian city: Plaza de Armas, cathedral, markets and parks. It’s more of a base to visit nearby attractions than an attraction itself.

It’s not an expensive place and it’s easier to find a cheap hostel than an expensive hotel. The nicest hotels are down in the valley, below the city. If you want a pretty lodge, look south of Chachapoyas towards Kuélap or north of Chachapoyas to Cocachimba.

Practicalities

Chachapoyas has only one flight daily from Lima, which is frequently cancelled in the rainy season December-March. The only airline that flies to Chachapoyas is Atsa, which serves small airports throughout Peru. They’re small planes but Atsa pilots are very safe and highly experienced with Peru’s most difficult runways.

By road, the easiest route is to fly to Tarapoto and drive through Moyobamba to Chachapoyas.
