Tyne Bridge

The New Tyne Bridge

The iconic Tyne Bridge standing high over the Quayside in Newcastle is known the World over.

It was the first single arched bridge in the UK and was opened by King George V in 1928. It was based on a modified design of the even more famous Sydney Harbour Bridge but finished three years earlier!

It links Newcastle to Gateshead and carried the Great North Road, which was then the A1 trunk road, from London to Edinburgh .

A symbol of the area’s industrial past, the bridge is much loved by Geordies everywhere.
