Black Heritage Trail

African-American history

100 Years NPS! - Copy 54th Regiment Shaw Memorial Saint Gaudens NPS

The Black Heritage Trail is a self-guided walk which focuses particularly on locations associated with the Black community in the Beacon Hill neighbourhood before, during, and after the American Civil War.

It particularly highlights the free Black community’s involvement in the abolitionist movement, the Underground Railroad, and the early Civil Rights Movement from the late 1700s to the mid-1800s. It includes the Lewis and Harriet Hayden House and the Abel Smith School.

A good place to start the tour is at the monument to the 54th Regiment in the northern corner of Boston Common
